And language apps in that niche followed and are pushing that idea further.
Pingo, Verbi, and Airlearn are turning the app avatar into the opponent.
The format we’ve been seeing most lately keeps coming back to the familiar language-learning pain point but with a twist.
Creators film themselves trying to say basic sentences in another language, then film the app’s avatar react like a brutally honest tutor.
It’s a mix of rage bait and bullying.
Verbi used it with:
“How do you say chicken in Italian?”- 7.5M views
Pingo AI
“How do you say oil in Italian?”- 578k views
Airlearn used the same frustration hook around French and reached 344K views.
The videos start with a face-close up of the creators face either in shock or sad then turns to the avatar giving feedback in dramatic and rude way.
And that’s what becomes the content: a pronunciation checker that makes you feel bullied.
To add another layer we found one of Pingo AI’s creator who scaled the format into a series of objects.
One German-learning creator is repeating the same setup with everyday words like eggs, peach, milk, sausage, plum, and cake. She holds the object in frame, asks how to say it in German, then lets the pronunciation struggle carry the joke.
One “plum” video hit 4.4M views.
A “cake” version reached 2.6M.
A “sausage” version reached 1.5M.
