When TikTok finds a new viral hook, the category is irrelevant. Every app jumps on it and tries to use it.
Youmeal, an app designed to help people organize recipes and plan their meals, is the latest to follow this trend, fully embracing the hook just like many others.
Hook: “X years doing Y, and only now I discovered…”
Sounds familiar?
- Travel → Roamy: Save Spot & Plan Trips -> “wdym we just spent 4 MONTHS planning our trip to Europe and WE JUST found this!?”
- Finance → BON Credit -> “I’ve been wondering how people my age afford so much and it turns out…”
- Education → LingoLooper: AI Language Game -> “3 years into learning Italian and now you found this”
- Shopping → Refind: Find clothes by photo ->“3 YEARS ON VINTED AND NO ONE TOLD ME THIS BRUH”
- Utilities → Hidden Camera Detector – Peek -> “nothing can embarrass me anymore… I found out when I was 19 my parents had hidden cameras in my room”
Spanish creators promoting Youmeal followed the same format.
“45 años cocinando y me entero de esto AHORA???”->4.3M views
Translated to: “45 years cooking and I just find out about this NOW???”
But not every video performed organically.
One example:
“20 años cocinando y RECIÉN me entero de esto??” → 4.2M views, 258 comments
“20 years cooking and I’m JUST finding out about this??”
However, the best-performing video came from a slightly different version of the hook.
“AMO cocinar y no vi esto NUNCA???” → 19.2M views
“I LOVE cooking and I’ve NEVER seen this???”
Even with mixed organic performance, the app is still showing strong early traction. With just 4 months on the market, Youmeal has already reached $20K in revenue and 40K downloads.
