“GTA in real life” struggle to first 10k downloads

There’s a new “GTA but in real life” game app that launched at the end of 2024 and it’s an interesting case study in product-market fit and TikTok-first growth.

The creator pushed it to about 10,000 downloads at its peak and it’s sitting around 7,000 now, which shows some early interest but not runaway traction.

He’s running three main social accounts and has posted roughly 900 videos that have totaled about 2 million views (so volume didn’t translate into breakout virality, at least yet).

He also experimented with a growth hack: posting the same single video across 28 fresh accounts, and that strategy didn’t work.

From what we can see the product itself isn’t well executed and the marketing was hit-or-miss, with only a handful of videos performing well. Still, we’re bullish on this category — location/map-driven apps and “real world” game mechanics are resonating on TikTok and Instagram right now, especially when you layer in AI to generate ideas, overlays, or dynamic content.

There are for sure many more concepts to explore around maps + AI that could scale better if someone nails the product polish and pairs it with tighter creative that’s built to go viral rather than just pumped out at volume.

We’ve covered a similar one that got a way better result, read it here.
